Sprinkler Blowouts For Tuesday, October 13, 2020

Everyone busted their tails yesterday and we knocked out 80 blowouts in one day.  That is a new record!  This while training a new guy to cover for the end of the week so we can cut down on the overtime.  I have known the trainee since he was three years old, which means 23 years, and knew he could pick up on the job pretty quickly.  He will spend another day with Jesse and then I will put him out on his own at the end of the week.

I went with Jacob on his route yesterday in Avimor and Hidden Springs and realized they aren’t as easy as they were last year.  Definitely getting old.  I am very fortunate I have a crew of hard-working people to take over for me while I run the office and dispatch.

One of the guys had a tire blowout on his vehicle yesterday and it cost him two hours while he went to a tire shop to get it taken care of.  His tire wasn’t in stock, so he is currently riding on his “donut.” The other crew members finished their routes and jumped in on his to get them completed.  It was a great showing of teamwork.

Here are the routes for today. If writing a check, please address it to, “The Maintenance Shop.”

    Good morning –
I noticed your crew has been staying in the Meridian, Boise, and Kuna areas. Do you have an idea when you will be able to service the Nampa area?
Our weather forecast states it will be freezing temps this Thursday night and on nights next week.
We moved here from S. Calif. and have been told we need to get the sprinkler blow out done before freezing temps begin.
    Thank you!

Welcome to Idaho! According to our calendar, we will be in Nampa next week. As we tell all new customers who haven’t had to deal with low temperatures, yes, sprinklers need to be blown out, but ground temperature and air temperature are two different things. Last year in the first week of December the ground temperature was only 34 degrees 6 inches down. It takes quite a while for that to happen. Anything above ground can freeze, but it isn’t getting cold enough yet. As I state over and over again every year to new customers who have never dealt with the cold, I don’t even blow out my own sprinklers until Thanksgiving day because it is the only day I have off to do so.

Honestly, I don’t think it even got cold enough last year underground to freeze anything. However, it needs to be done because we just don’t know what the weather will do. Last year we had a quick freeze in the middle of October, and then it was mild the rest of the time.

Since you are new, I also need to point out that there are not enough technicians in this valley to handle the growth, and many people have to wait 2-3 weeks or even longer for a blowout. We grow by nearly 1,000 customers each year, but we are the #1 blowout company in the Treasure Valley, and it is even hard for us to keep up. We have done nearly 475 blowouts since we started on October 5.

When I say technicians, I mean QUALIFIED technicians. There are plenty out there who think they know what they are doing and rent a compressor, blow out your sprinklers and then disappear and in the spring when there are problems with your system you can’t find them. They take advantage of the fact there are not enough of us to go around.

    Hi-
When do you plan on being in the Spurwing Heights area? We’re heading out of town so I want to make sure you can get to what you need to. Thanks!

We have a good idea of which zip code we are going to be working in advance, but do not have the addresses until late in the evening before and then we send out a text and email when your time has come. Before we route for the next day we have to wait until all machines are finished for the day and a count is made, and ones completed removed from rotation. Then we have to input all the new ones that came in during the day and remove all cancellations, and then start putting our routes together. After all is said and done the routes are finally sent out to each customer affected anywhere between 10:00 – 11:30 pm. It’s an involved process.

If you are out of town when we only need access through gates so we can get to valve boxes, and if they can’t be found would need timer access. The majority of the time we find what we need without using the timer.
