Sprinkler Blowouts For Monday, December 5, 2022

Saturday didn’t start very well for Challis.  He did his daily inspection on the compressor and my service rig and found a blown tire on the compressor.  After getting the tires replaced he got back out on the road but was unable to finish his route.  He went out yesterday, (Sunday) to get the 7-8 he had left.

We still have people leaving the covers off their valve boxes probably thinking it is going to help us do our job.  The effort is appreciated, but it actually makes our job harder and can actually damage a sprinkler system doing so.  With the covers off, the valves have no protection and will freeze.  If the lids are left off there is no protection for the valves are other crucial system parts and they will freeze. Remember what I have said several times over the years.  The ground protects your sprinkler system from the cold for quite some time.  Honestly, it is a crap shoot whether the freeze level will reach your sprinkler system piping.  Each year is different. Last year I don’t think the freeze level got down to sprinkler piping because I did a temperature check the first week of December last year and I believe the ground temperature six inches down was only 38 degrees. Some years you might not need your sprinklers actually blown out.  We never know what we are going to run into weather wise so it is always best just to do it anyway for peace of mind.

These last few days as we work on blowouts we are going to run across some we can’t do for one reason or another and will have to reschedule especially if a repair is needed. We have seen a few broken backflow preventers, but most of our customers pre-winterized their backflows using the instructions we had given earlier that we posted here and in our terms.

We sent out two emails and 2-3 text reminders regarding the routes below, so hopefully, we won’t get any non-cancellations.  If you we, I think I will lose all faith in humanity.
