Sprinkler Blowouts For Thursday, November 9, 2023

I am wishing a big happy birthday to my wife Sheila. She’s in pretty good spirits considering the pain from just having knee surgery and having a gause bandage the size of a melon wrapped around her knee. When I was doing blowouts on my own with no help many years ago, I always took November 9 off to spend time with Sheila because she gets neglected this time of year like a hunter’s wife. Nowadays I can’t take the time off because I have to keep all my clowns in the ring,  (Jesse, Brian, Bruno) and manage the 70 texts I get per hour.

A few days ago I was contacted by a sprinkler blowout competitor who felt they were the appointed ones to set me straight on several things:

  1.  “Don’t show your stats for everyone to see. It could have a disastrous effect on the number of blowouts you receive when potential customers think you won’t be able to get to them. (Yep, that’s true. We get 3,500 requests a season now. I can’t fathom how many we would get if we took the page down.)”
  2.  “Don’t put your cancellation link in the text reminders. If they don’t cancel when they are supposed to, you make more money when you get to their property.” (Yep, that’s true as well, but why would I not want to remind people with their busy lives that may have forgotten? And how did a competitor figure out what I put in our notification texts?)
  3.  “I saw that your wife posted a link in Next Door with information on how to protect your system from freezing. You are affecting all of us including yourself with loss of potential income for system and backflow repairs.” (Yep, we are really hurting for business. Yep, uh huh……. Isn’t it a good thing to help your community?)
  4. (And last but not least) “You are too transparent and offer too much information. I read your blog.” (Uh, isn’t that basically what he was saying throughout his entire conversation? I wonder what HE is hiding……)

What are YOUR thoughts regarding this conversation? I have a good friend, David Meine, who is a competitor and has sent a LOT of work our way since he cut back, and he stores our machines across the pasture from his own during the off-season. He would NEVER say anything like that to me.

Anyway, here are the routes for today:
