A Full Crew, a Revised Battle Plan, and Three Working Compressors

Yesterday turned out remarkably well, even though we were one technician short. The compressors behaved themselves, the guys made good progress, and nobody called to report a mechanical catastrophe.

In this business, that’s practically a vacation.

Our sick technician is feeling better and will be back on the road today, which brings us back to three technicians. That’s good news, because I was beginning to wonder whether I should start interviewing the compressors to see if any of them could operate themselves.

Today’s routing will be a little different. Jesse and Eddie will work the same route, with Jesse starting at the top of the list and Eddie at the bottom. They’ll work toward each other, which should help us cover more ground and catch up on the stops Jesse couldn’t finish yesterday.

Bryan will be working a separate route.

If we didn’t make it to your property yesterday, don’t worry. We still have your information, and we’re working through the remaining stops. There’s no need to submit another request. My spreadsheets already have enough duplicate entries to qualify as a breeding program.

Of course, putting two technicians on opposite ends of the same route creates an interesting situation. In theory, they’ll eventually meet somewhere in the middle. In practice, this is sprinkler blowout season, so I’ll consider it a victory if they both end up in the same ZIP code.

Meanwhile, I’ll be back at my four-monitor command center, tracking routes, answering customer messages, processing invoices, and trying to anticipate whatever surprises the day has in store.

After thirty years of doing this, I’ve learned that no matter how carefully you plan, something will eventually go sideways.

That’s why I don’t consider our daily routes and schedules carved in stone.

They’re more like strongly worded suggestions.

All things considered, yesterday was a good day, and we’re heading into Thursday with a full crew and a workable plan.

Which is encouraging.

It’s also suspicious.
